[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Good preparation for a ski lesson is essential for a child\u2019s first ski experience. Using the right equipment is very important to avoid becoming too warm or too cold, to be able to successfully develop a good skiing technique and to play in a safe environment.<\/p>\n

Clothing<\/h3>\n

Warm clothing is essential for children, keep in mind they get colder more quickly than adults. Wearing several layers is much better than one thick one and try to use thermals. Some parents choose the all-in-one ski outfits, which are very good at keeping the snow out.<\/p>\n

TIP<\/em><\/strong> – Avoid slow drying clothing, like cotton, as once it gets wet it gets cold.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Skis<\/p>\n

The skis should be appropriate to the size and the ability of your child. Please match the ski to the skill level of the child from beginner through to advanced junior racers. As a rough guide, for children aged between 3 to 5 years old the ski should come up to their chin when held vertically, for older children up to their nose. Kid\u2019s skis are available for both boys and girls with graphics and cool features.<\/p>\n

TIP – <\/em><\/strong>It is worth putting stickers with your child\u2019s name onto the skis so they don\u2019t get mixed up in the morning or at lunch.<\/p>\n

Back Protector<\/h3>\n

We recommend that all children wear a back protector. (please note this is not compulsory), there are some great brands out there which make child specific back protectors that your child can put on like another piece of clothing.<\/p>\n

TIP<\/strong> \u2013 POC make a great child specific back protector which you put on like another layer, with a zip on the front allowing for extra comfort.<\/p>\n

Boots<\/h3>\n

A good fit is essential, snug on the foot and with no pressure points<\/p>\n

TIP<\/em><\/strong> – It can be difficult to tell with very young children if the boot is comfortable, check after the first day for any rub marks from the boots and if in doubt go back to the shop and change.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Helmet<\/h3>\n

Wearing a helmet is compulsory for all ski lessons and a must-have for all children. Reputable ski schools will not accept children without helmets.<\/p>\n

Poles<\/h3>\n

Even if your child wants poles, in the early days it is not always a good idea. Ski poles can be a distraction when learning to ski. Initially it is best to just leave them at home and their instructor will decide when to introduce them to the lesson.
\nTIP<\/strong> \u2013 we know that kids grow out of equipment very quickly. You can buy extendable ski poles which you can keep adapting as your kids grow!<\/p>\n

Extra kit<\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Socks<\/em> \u2013 these should be long, fit well and quick drying.<\/li>\n
  • Goggles<\/em> \u2013 protection from the sun is essential for children. Even on a cloudy day the sun can still be damaging to eyes.<\/li>\n
  • Gloves<\/em> \u2013 waterproof not too tight and preferably on a string so they don\u2019t get lost.<\/li>\n
  • Body armor<\/em> \u2013 for advanced skiers and anyone hitting the park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    TIP<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0–\u00a0It is always good to give your child a small bag of sweets (e.g.\u00a0<\/em>gummy bears)<\/i><\/p>\n

    Rental Ski Equipment<\/h2>\n

    Altitude don\u2019t provide rental equipment; however we have partnered with No.1 who are located across the road from our group lesson meeting point and our booking office. This makes it easy for you to rent and collect your equipment before lessons , or come and see us if you have any questions!
