Andermatt in Winter: More Than Just Skiing

When winter arrives in Andermatt, the village transforms into a spectacular alpine playground.

Of course, skiing and snowboarding are a huge part of the attraction — and for many visitors, they’re the main reason for coming. But there’s much more to experience once the skis are off.

From freeriding and cross-country skiing to snowshoeing and sledging, Andermatt offers plenty of ways to enjoy the mountains in winter.

Skiing and Snowboarding: The Heart of Andermatt

Let’s start with the obvious one.

Andermatt is a fantastic destination for skiers and snowboarders, with terrain to suit a wide range of abilities and some particularly exciting options for more experienced skiers.

Beginners and intermediate skiers can enjoy the more accessible pistes around the resort, while advanced skiers will find plenty to challenge them, particularly around Gemsstock.

And then there’s the powder.

Andermatt has built a strong reputation for freeride skiing, with its high-altitude terrain and often impressive snow conditions making it a favourite with adventurous skiers and snowboarders.

Whether you’re working on your first parallel turns or looking for your next big mountain challenge, there’s plenty to explore.

Freeride and Backcountry: For the Thrill Seekers

If fresh powder is what you’re looking for, Andermatt is particularly exciting.

The area around Gemsstock is well known for its freeride terrain, with steep slopes, open powder fields and challenging lines attracting experienced skiers from around the world.

But off-piste skiing comes with additional risks. Conditions can change quickly in the mountains, and avalanche awareness, appropriate equipment and knowledge of the terrain are essential.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area or looking to explore beyond the marked pistes, going with a qualified local mountain guide or instructor is the safest way to discover the terrain.

It’s not just about finding the best snow — it’s about knowing where and when it’s safe to ski.

Cross-Country Skiing: Enjoy the Alps at Your Own Pace

Not everyone wants to spend their winter charging down steep slopes.

For a completely different experience, try cross-country skiing in the surrounding Ursern Valley.

The trails offer a quieter way to experience the landscape, with snow-covered peaks, open valleys and traditional alpine scenery providing an impressive backdrop.

Whether you prefer classic or skate skiing, cross-country skiing is a great way to explore the region while getting plenty of exercise at the same time.

Snowshoeing: A Quieter Side of Andermatt

Want to slow things down even further?

Snowshoeing is a wonderful way to explore the winter landscape away from the busier ski runs.

Walking through snow-covered forests and open mountain landscapes gives you the chance to experience a much quieter side of Andermatt.

It’s also a great option for families, non-skiers or anyone who simply wants a day away from the pistes.

And there’s something particularly satisfying about heading out into fresh snow, surrounded by mountains, without needing to worry about lift queues or piste maps.

Sledging: Simple, Fast and Fun

Sledging is one of those activities that proves you don’t need complicated equipment to have a great time in the mountains.

It’s fun for children, but don’t be surprised if the adults in your group end up enjoying it just as much.

Depending on the conditions and current seasonal operation, the area around Nätschen offers opportunities for sledging and winter fun away from the ski pistes.

It’s an easy way to add something different to your trip — and a great option for a family afternoon.

And Then There’s Everything Else

One of the best things about spending winter in Andermatt is that you don’t have to ski every single day.

You can spend the morning on the mountain, explore the village in the afternoon, enjoy a winter walk or simply find somewhere cosy for a coffee and watch the snow fall.

And when you combine all of that with the skiing, freeriding, mountain scenery and traditional Swiss atmosphere, it’s easy to see why Andermatt makes such a memorable winter destination.
